Important Dates

Chris Giles - Head of Aquatics and Waterskiing, Chief of Golden Horseshoe, Eagle Chieftain, has been working with Fran and Jordan for seventeen years. Chris grew up on the Isle of Wight, England and is currently residing with his wife Casey in Phoenix, AZ where they celebrated the birth of their first son, Brady, this past year. In the off-season Chris produces and markets running events.

Kevin Kaminsky - Program Director, Head of Rookie Weekend, Wolf Chieftain, Kevin has been involved with Camp Horseshoe for 7 years. He was a three-sport varsity athlete in high school and two-sport collegiate athlete. He has been coaching basketball of all levels from third grade to a varsity high school assistant for the last ten years. Kevin has been an athletic program director for the Park District of Highland Park and is currently entering his tenth year as a coach for Highwood Small Fry and working full time in the off-season for Camp Horseshoe. In addition to his role at Camp Horseshoe, Kevin now runs basketball programs for Hi Five sports in the fall and winter.

Harry “Big H” Prendergast - Inspector General, Head of Polar Bears, Moon Chieftain, Big “H” is in his 30th season at Horseshoe. A teacher for 35 years and Athletic Director of Boys State in South Dakota. A veteran of Iwo Jima, and other battles in WWII, he played basketball in the Naval Olympics while in Japan—and won. Throughout an illustrious coaching career, he produced two professional football players and was himself a four-time Hall of Famer.

Lucy Pinkwater - Horseshoe Review Editor, Head of Frequently Asked Questions, and Lucy IS the office, as well as in charge of ceremonial regalia for all council related events. Eighteen years of camping experience in the Northwoods, this is her sixth year at Horseshoe. She graduated from Univ of Wisconsin with a degree in History and currently teaches high school social studies at a charter school in South Central Los Angeles.

Bill Engel - Keeper of Traditions, Sun Chieftain, Head of Fishing, Baitcasting, and Fencing, has been a camper and counselor at Horseshoe for 24 seasons. He was in the last group to be initiated into the Golden Horseshoe Society by Doc H, the founder of Camp Horseshoe. In the off season he is a professor of literature at the University of the South (Sewanee, TN). He is an ASEP certified coach and received a diploma from the US Olympic Coaches College for Fencing and has been ranked nationally in epee.


Important Dates

Iain Abernethy - From Liverpool England. Currently reads Ancient History and Classics at the University of Liverpool going into his final year. Iain has a keen interest in adventure sports and has various teaching qualifications in skiing and rock climbing, as well as being keen in rugby, soccer and sailing. This is his fourth year at The Shoe.

Andy Abrams - Andy is in his first year on staff at Camp Horseshoe but 7th at The Shoe total. He is an avid tripper as well as volleyball player and all around athlete. He will be a senior at Highland Park High School in the fall of 2010.

Brendon Berger - Born in Seoul, South Korea, but raised in Eagan, Minnesota. He graduated from the Brown College School of Radio Broadcasting and interned at CBS radio Minneapolis. Most recently he hosted a morning show on KXGN-AM; he’s now taking a break from the world of commercial radio to instruct at The Shoe. In addition to being a jock he’s boxed, played rugby for the Minnesota select side squad and coached/played football since the age of 10. This is his first time at a summer camp and first at The Shoe.

Michael Bernstein - From Highland Park, Illinois. Michael will be a senior at Highland Park High School. He is on the varsity basketball and track teams and also played two years of high school volleyball. This will be his first year on staff, 7th at Horseshoe, and 9th summer at overnight camp.

Ben Blackman - Certified in climbing, in addition a 4 year high school wrestler. A member of the Na Ta Ne Dancer Family, he has been at the Shoe for six years. Originally from Glencoe, Ben will be attending the University of Wisconsin Madison this fall as a zoology major. This is his second year on the staff.

Michael Bloom - Junior counselor liaison, is in his fifth year at Horseshoe. Storm Chieftain is originally from Springfield, MA, and attended Indiana University in Bloomington. This fall he will be pursuing a career in the entertainment field in Los Angeles. He has previously lived in Chicago and worked as a basketball coach at Highland Park High school and 7th and 8th grade feeder programs. At camp he spends most his time working with kids and there development in basketball, golf, music, and overall self-confidence.

Martin Borras - Head of Tennis. Martin is from Miami Beach, FL and has been teaching tennis for over 16 years in Florida, California, New York, Hawaii and the Caribbean. He was the Tennis Director at Camp Walden in Diamond Point, New York last summer and has loved being part of the camp experience since he was a kid. He attended Florida International University in Miami, FL and the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL where he played tennis and soccer. Martin received a degree in Business Management in 1996. He loves all sports especially tennis, soccer, and horseback riding. This is his first year at The Shoe.

Chris Brind - from Haywards Heath, Sussex. He works as a Recreation Assistant at a local leisure centre and has a level 2 NVQ sport and leisure. He is a trained lifeguard, badminton and swimming coach and plays basketball with a local team. He has a special interest in roller hockey and he has represented Great Britain at the world and European cups. This is his first year at The Shoe.

Ty Broderson - From Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He will be starting his sophomore year studying business at Ithaca College in upstate New York next fall. In high school he played varsity soccer, varsity squash, and club rugby for his township. In college, he plays club squash and club rugby. This will be Ty’s first year at Camp Horseshoe.

Torey Broderson - From Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, will be a sophomore at The College of Charleston in 2010. In high school he was a varsity tennis, squash, and rugby player and dual captain. He is a top nationally ranked squash player and a runner-up PIAA tennis player. Torey started the C of C squash team in 2009, bringing them to collegiate team nationals and a national ranking of #57 in their first year. This is his first year at the Shoe.

Daniel Burns - A qualified lifeguard and level 1 soccer coach, from London, England that is energetic and always on the go. He currently works in banking but has decided to give it all up for the excitement of Camp! Bring on the Shoe!

Stuart Clarke - From Cardiff, Wales, just finished his first year at Oxford Brookes studying Sport Studies and Coaching. While in university, Stu has joined the rugby league team and recently got promoted in the league. He is a lifeguard and certified on the climbing wall, as well as being a certified coach in basketball and football (soccer), he recently completed his UKCC level two in rugby union. As well as sports, Stu really enjoys outdoor adventures and led the Canadian Boundary Waters trip in 2009. This is Stu’s second year on staff and considers Horseshoe a home away from home.

Josh Cowin - Stallion Chieftain, Evening Programs, and Chief of the Woodsman, comes from Highland Park, IL. He is a junior at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, double majoring in Political Science and Sociology, he has 12 years of camping experience. This is his fifth year at Horseshoe and fourth year on the Horseshoe staff.

Jim Crick - From East London, Has been in the British Army and worked as a Personal Trainer in one of London’s top gyms. He plays rugby for East London RFC and has captained a league winning season as well as coaching the youth team at the club. He is a newly qualified Red Cross lifeguard and plays both electric and acoustic guitar. This will be Jim’s first year at The Shoe.

John Davis (Cameron) - From Boerne, Texas. He is a sophomore at College of Charleston and is majoring in psychology. In high school he won a Texas state championship in tennis and is currently apart of the College of Charleston club squash team. He has worked at summer camps for 4 years in the Texas hill country and will be found mostly around the tennis courts. This will be his first year at Camp Horseshoe.

Gil Degand - From Highland Park, IL. Gil currently has one quarter remaining at Depaul University where he is working towards a degree in Child Psychology. Throughout the year he coaches basketball for Highwood Small Fry, and for Glenbrook North Feeder. Once his degree is done Gil will be pursuing his Teaching Certificate. This will be his 2nd summer at the Shoe, and 6th overall at overnight camp.

Robbie Deutsch - From Highland Park and is a basketball instructor. He is a member of the Friend Family, and this will be his seventh year at Horseshoe, first on staff. He will be a senior at Highland Park High School and member of the varsity basketball team.

Ben Dinnies - A senior at the Univ of MN, Duluth, from Luck, WI, has many years of camping experience and knows riflery inside-out. This is his second summer at Horseshoe.

Guy Eizner - Guy is in his first year at Camp Horseshoe as one of the camp’s security guards. He is 21 years old and recently finished his 3 year commitment to the Israeli Army service. He majored in Geography while in school.

Zoe Engel - From Nashville, TN, is a sophomore at Indiana University majoring in Nonprofit Management. She works as a lifeguard and all around counselor. She has had four years of camping experience in Maine, and this is her fourth year on Horseshoe staff.

Simon Engel - From Nashville, TN, is currently attending Martin Luther King Junior Magnet High School. He is an avid cross-country runner and has some experience with high school wrestling. He received the Tripping Award his final year as a camper in addition to becoming Golden Horseshoe. Fearless Oak enjoys tripping and wilderness survival, but is capable of leading and teaching campers in any activity.

Danny Epstein - From Northbrook, Illinois, is a senior at Glenbrook North High School. This will be his 7th year at Camp Horseshoe. He has played volleyball for both a club team in the winter and his school. When not at camp, he spends his time snowboarding and skateboarding. This will be his first summer as a counselor.

Jacob Fishbein - Attends Highland Park High School and will be a senior in the fall of 2010. This is his 6th year at Horseshoe, first as a counselor. He is on Highland Park's Varsity Tennis team, and this year at camp will be spending a majority of his time helping and teaching kids the sport of tennis. He is a proud member of the Elk family.

Yishai Friedlander - from Jerusalem, Israel. Returning for his 4th year on staff after a year of absence. He graduated with Psychology and Sociology degree while studying in Israel. Yishai is playing for a semi-pro basketball team in Jerusalem, and been known for his ruthless defense. He spent 3 years in the artillery force of the Israeli army, and has come to camp all but one summer since. Besides playing basketball, he is also a part time referee in a small league in Israel. His patience and calmness are his way of life.

Casey Giles - Assistant to the Head of Skiing, is in her fifth summer at The Shoe and can be found all over camp. She has a BS in Elementary and Special Education from Northern Arizona, and a Masters in Educational Counseling. She has been teaching special education for eight years in Phoenix to children with varying disabilities. Casey has been a cross-country and track coach and loves everything about camp, and most importantly mother to a beautiful baby boy, Brady.

Kirby-Nicole Gilliam - From Arlington, Tennessee, Kirby completed her first year of college at Vanderbilt University where she is pre-med and majoring in Neuroscience. With nine years of camping experience in Tennessee, this will be her first year on staff at Horseshoe.

Alex Glabman (aka Glabber, Glabiano) - Village Chieftain, Assistant to the Skiing Director, lead D.J. and Head of Audio-Visual. Glabbers is from Highland Park, IL, and attends Vanderbilt Univ where he studies "Human & Organizational Development." He has been a part-time Athletic Supervisor for the Park District of Highland Park. Twelve years of camping in the Northwoods, “Passionate Cougar” is a member of Golden Horseshoe. This is his seventh year at Horseshoe and 4th on staff.

Alex Gordon - Will be a freshman at the University of Illinois in the fall majoring in hospitality management and works for the Park District of Highland Park. With eleven years of camping experience in the Northwoods, 7 at The Shoe, “Smiling Dancer” is in his second year on staff.

Ben Halksworth - From Chesterfield, Derbyshire, UK graduated form the University of Hull with a degree in Sport and Exercise Science. Loves all sports, played in football (soccer) leagues since the age of 10 , a keen swimmer competing individually and at club level and has played 2 seasons in the English Lacrosse leagues. Former president of Hull University Men's Lacrosse Club. Recently taken up cycling to keep fit and looking for a new challenge in this area of sport. Qualified level 1 coach in Football, Swimming and Lacrosse. First time at camp, and first time at The Shoe.

Mitchell Hammes - From Glencoe, IL, attends New Trier High School. He has eight years of camping experience in the Northwoods, 6 at Horseshoe. This is his first year on staff. A member of the Bear family, he can be found playing all land sports.

Benn Harper - From Melbourne, Australia. He loves playing and watching sports all kind. He plays AFL football and basketball. The certificates Benn has are Pool lifeguard, Surf lifesaving Australia, First Aid and CPR. This is his first time at camp and is really looking forward to being a part of all different activities.

Adam 'Adman' Harris - This is his first year at camp as a general counselor. Adam has worked in investment banking for the past 3 years in London for HSBC. He is a qualified American Red Cross Lifeguard and has a Level 1 FA coaching badge in soccer. He is a fanatic West Ham United supporter and loves playing soccer.

Andrew Holzman - River Chieftain is entering his senior year at the University of Wisconsin, and is back at camp for his 5th summer. From leading Baseball and Frisbee clubs to organizing competitions and socials, as well as helping out on the waterfront and the ski docks. Andrew is truly found all over camp.

Brady Homer - From Sac City, Iowa, is attending Iowa State University to become an elementary education teacher. He is certified in CPR. Brady is the Vice President of the Students Helping Rescue Animals Club at Iowa State. This is his first year at camp Horseshoe and hopefully not his last.

William Jennens - Has lived in Gold Coast Australia for the last two and a half years, but originally from New Zealand. Hobbies and sports include, surfing, skimboarding, wakeboarding, skateboarding and Taekwon-do. Won first place in the Australian Taekwon-do nationals sparring. Will is a qualified Fire Alarm technician for Wormald and has been working with the company for 6 years. This is his first year at The Shoe.

Michael Jolley - From Melbourne, Australia, loves surfing and playing sports, especially Aussie Rules Football, and competes in triathlons. His certifications include Surf Life Saving Australia, Pool Lifegaurd, Austswim(WSI), Senior First Aid, and CPR. This will be Mick’s second year on staff at Camp Horseshoe.

Jake Kalmin - From Highland Park, IL, Jake is a 4 year high school hockey player coming up on his 6th year at Camp Horseshoe. He is excited to be on his first year of staff. Bound to be a senior in High School and nothing can phase him. Most call him Jake but others call him Courageous Moon.

Brian Katz - From Deerfield, IL, a graduate from the University of Kansas (BA History), is completing his MAT at National-Louis University. A certified teacher, he worked at Baker Demonstration School in Evanston this past year and will be teaching abroad in the fall. Also he is certified in first aid and on the ERI Climbing Wall, and has worked at summer camps for 8 years. This is his first year at Horseshoe.

Dan Kirkpatrick - Head of Tripping and Canadian Pointman, is certified as a climbing instructor, lifeguard, CPR and Wilderness First Aide. He has backpacked extensively in the Appalachians, the Continental Divide, and around Canada from Whistler to Banff. Originally from Tulsa, Dan is an Oklahoma State Cowboy. This is his second year at Horseshoe.

Cody Koress - Cody is in his sixth year at Camp Horseshoe. He will be a senior at New Trier High School in the fall. He speedskates with the Evanston Speed Skating Club and snow skis in alpine races all over the Mid-west in the winter. In the spring, he plays water polo for the New Trier varsity team and is a certified lifeguard. He is a member of the Golden Horseshoe Society. This is Joyful Spruce's first year on the Camp Horseshoe staff.

Nick Korn - Skiing instructor and barefoot skiing specialist extraordinaire, sophomore at University of Illinois where he is majoring in natural resources and environmental sciences as well as business. He is a certified lifeguard and qualified in first aid and CPR. With ten years of camping experience this is his third on the Horseshoe staff.

Jacob (Jake) Krengel - Head of Hockey, is from Jackson, MI and attends Grand Valley State Univ. He is a Social Studies major and German minor. He will be attending Ludwig Maximilians Universitat in Munich this fall. An all-around counselor, this is his second year at The Shoe.

David Lederer - Tennis Pro, Head of Ping-pong, can be found everywhere around camp. Laughing Hawk is in his seventh year at Horseshoe and his third as a counselor. He graduated from Highland Park High School and will be a sophomore at Colgate University. He has been a Sunday School Teacher's Aide, Tennis teacher at Green Acres Country Club, and High School Math Tutor.

Andrew Linton - From Highland Park, Illinois and will be attending UIC in the fall to pursue his degree in mathematics. He was co-captain of the 2002 HPHS basketball team and played receiver for the football team. He recently finished his four year tour with the United States Marine Corps where he worked with CH-46 helicopters. This past spring he finished his first year coaching basketball for the Highwood Small Fry Blue Team. This will be his first year at The Shoe.

Tyler Litke - From Highland Park has six years of camping experience and is in his second year on the staff. A member of the Golden Horseshoe Society, Soaring Hawk is a past winner of the Horseshoe Camper Award. Tyler will be a freshman at the University of Texas in the fall of 2010.

Matt Lougee - From Upton, Wyoming, will be attending Black Hills State in September majoring in Education Social Science and getting an endorsement in coaching. In High School he was a 2-time All State football and basketball player and all conference in track. This is his first year at The Shoe.

Brian MacCready - From Jackson, MI, is pursuing a career in video media. He played Football for a State Finalist high school team, and attends Grand Valley State University. He umpires little-league baseball and likes writing. This is his first year as a counselor at Camp Horseshoe, where he'll help lead frisbee and rugby activities.

Brian Malkin - From Glencoe is a sophomore at the University of Michigan where he is in the pre-business program. Proud Wolf has twice earned Golden Horseshoe and, with 10 years of camping experience, is in his third on staff and 7th’s total at Horseshoe.

Zack Malkin - Horseshoe Ski Staff, audio/visual team. From Glencoe, IL, he will be a sophomore at the University of Texas majoring in business. Courageous Hawk has ten years camping experience, 7 at Horseshoe and this being his third on staff.

Danny (Diesel) Malkin - From Glencoe, Shining Bear is in his seventh season at The Shoe and this is his second on the staff. He will be attending the Ross School of Business at Michigan this fall and is also a member of the Horseshoe Ski Staff.

Shane Marks - Waterfront Director, from Rotorua, New Zealand, has been working at The ZORB in New Zealand. Bobcat Chieftain is a certified lifeguard, WSI, First Aid, and Wilderness First Aid. This is his sixth year at Horseshoe.

Tyler Max - A senior at Highland Park High School, this is his sixth summer at Horseshoe and first on staff. He is a varsity basketball player and has expertise in most land sports. Tyler is also a proud member of the Friend family.

Joe McLaren - Basketball coach. From Reading, England. Graduated 2009 from the University of Chichester in Sports Development. Leading scorer on University team for all 3 years and was selected as one of 20 athletes to compete for the English Universities Basketball Squad in 2009, zand was asked to tryout for the Great Britain National Basketball team in Brunel London. Currently plays semi-professional Basketball in England for Northampton Neptunes. He is a qualified coach in basketball, coaching a school team for 2 consecutive years. This will be Joe’s second year on staff and will be a physical education teacher when going back to London.

Riley McLeod - From Nelson, New Zealand. He has a certificate in Fitness and Exercise Science level 5, qualified swim instructor and lifeguard. This is his first year at Camp Horseshoe and super excited to be missing New Zealand’s winter. His interests include the outdoors, sports and learning new skills.

Josh Och - All-around land sports counselor who can usually be found playing basketball, soccer, or volleyball as well as holding fort at archery. A graduate of Scarsdale High School in NY, he is now a sophomore at the Univ of Pennsylvania majoring in Engineering. At home he tutors Math and Science. A member of the Elk family, he has been at Horseshoe for seven years, and is in his third as a counselor.

Mikey Pollack - Is from Highland Park, Illinois. He is going to be a senior at Highland Park High School and hopes to attend the University of Michigan. Mikey played freshman and sophomore baseball and also plays tennis. This will be his eighth year at overnight camp and his sixth at the Shoe. This year is the first year he will be a counselor.

Aaron “Praz” Prazanka - Enters his first year at Horseshoe. Aaron is a lacrosse coach at Highland Park high school and just finished the year working at Edgewood Middle School. In addition to running the lacrosse program he will be a co director of our hockey program.

Alex Rosenberg - Freshman at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. A member of the Golden Horseshoe Society, Courageous Fire, has nine years of camping experience, loves all land sports, and this is his second year on the staff.

Jeremy Rosenfeld - This is his 6th year at Camp Horseshoe. Jeremy will be attending the University of Wisconsin next year. He played varsity baseball and hockey at New Trier High School. Jeremy is a member of Golden Horseshoe (Triumphant Stallion). This will be his first year on staff after taking last summer off due to sports commitments. He is anxiously awaiting his trip back up to THE SHOE.

Ari Rubin - From Highland Park, IL, a sophomore at Harvard University where he is studying Applied Math or Social Studies. Ari enjoys tripping, land sports, riddles and winning league championships. His favorite foods at camp are spaghetti and meatballs, meatball sandwiches and Sunday brunch. A member of GH, Noble Spirit is in his 9th year of overnight camping, 7th at The Shoe and 4th on staff.

Alex Rush - From Highland Park, Illinois. He will be a senior at Highland Park High school in the fall of 2010 and is very involved in the theatre program. lex also is involved in his school's Model United Nations Team. This will be his 7th year attending Horseshoe and first year attending Horseshoe as a counselor. He loves all age groups of campers, and finds that one of his strengths is working with kids who have issues with sleep away camp as he claims he was one himself.

Gary Rutland - From London, England. Prior to going to Camp, Gary worked for an Investment company called International Financial Data Services. Awarded Level 1 Certificate in coaching football (soccer) and will be doing his Level 2 shortly. In his spare time his hobbies include Football, Gym and Fishing. Gary also coaches a Local Children’s football team, Pegasus Football Club, where he teaches an age range of 8-14 year olds. This will be his first time at The Shoe.

Jared Saltzberg - A senior at Highland Park High School, is a certified lifeguard. Jared is a high school volleyball player and played two years of high school basketball. He has eight years of camping experience in the Northwoods, and seven at Horseshoe. A member of the Star family, this is his first year on staff at The Shoe.

Billy Schrero - Head of football and general all around helper, attends Tulane University where he is double majoring in Political Science and English. With nine years of camping experience, this is his third on the Horseshoe staff.

Darran Seed - From New Plymouth, New Zealand. He has been building for the past 6 and a half years and really enjoying it. He is currently self- employed, just came back from doing a Contiki Trip through Europe and backpacking through the UK as well. Darran is a current lifeguard for his local club, and also races paddling canoes and racing IRB motorboats with national titles in both. He can be found on the waterfront, soccer pitch, and occasionally around the tripping shed. This is his first trip to America and first experience as an overnight camp counselor. He is eager to meet people from all over the world and and learn about different cultures.

Jacob Serck - From Deerfield, Illinois is going to be a senior at Deerfield High School in the fall of 2010. This is going to be his 6th year at Horseshoe and 7th at overnight camp. Jacob is on the Deerfield High School varsity hockey team. He also enjoys playing golf. He is hoping to pursue a career in education and currently helps coach a youth hockey team in Highland Park.

Ki Shin - From New Orleans, Ki Shin is entering his second year on the Horseshoe staff. He is a junior at Tulane University where he is double majoring in Finance and Marketing. His enthusiasm is felt all around camp and his mess hall cheers are second to none. Ki consistently finds way to coach for league championships and his radio set may be banned from competitions this year.

Ashleigh Simpson - From Auckland, New Zealand. She just graduated from the University of Auckland with a Bachelor in Science and is currently working in Finance. Ashleigh is a certified Lifeguard and First Aider and loves doing any activity by the water! This is her first year at Camp Horseshoe.

Jared Smith - From Highland park, IL, is a senior at Highland Park High School and played on the junior varsity boys volleyball team. This year will be his seventh summer at Camp Horseshoe, and eighth year in the Northwoods. This is his JC year and he is extremely excited to spend his first year as a counselor. He can be found anywhere in camp, and is also a certified lifeguard and a very good tripper.

Justin Spitz - From Glencoe, IL, and will be a Senior at New Trier High School in the fall of 2010. This is his 7th year at Camp Horseshoe. This will be Devoted Fire’s first year as a counselor. He can be found anywhere at camp but primarily on the ski docks. He plays club volleyball during the winter and volunteers at a soup kitchen in downtown Chicago through a service group sponsored by New Trier.

David Topel - From Highland Park is a sophomore at Indiana University majoring in Business. He has worked for the Park District of Highland Park coaching youth sports as well as working with young children in various other organizations. Loyal Sage has eleven years of camping experience and this is his third year on the Horseshoe staff.

Daniel Waner - Comes to The Shoe by means of New York. He has lived all over the world and worked at various camps over the last ten years. He specializes in outdoor adventure as well as being a certified climber and wilderness EMT. This is his first year at Camp Horseshoe.

Justin Wang - From Houston, TX. Justin goes to school at Harvard College where he will be a sophomore next semester and will probably be a chemical and physical biology major. He likes to play basketball, baseball, soccer and pretty much every sport/game invented. At the same time he enjoys jamming on his violin/piano. This is Justin’s first year at Camp Horseshoe.

Simi Wang - Is a Level 2 Basketball Coach and NPLQ Qualified Lifeguard who comes to us from Guildford, England. He has his MEND in Computers, Electronics and Communication from the University of Bath and has training as a System Test Engineer at Westinghouse Rail Systems. This is his second year at The Shoe where he teaches and coaches tennis and basketball.

Seth Weinkranz - Hails from Penn Valley Pennsylvania. He just concluded his freshmen year at Ithaca College, located in gorgeous upstate New York. He rowed crew throughout high school and enjoys any type of water sport from wake boarding to canoeing and portaging. In his spare time Seth enjoys hiking, snowboarding, gorge jumping and climbing. This is his first summer with Camp Horseshoe.

Daniel Weiss - From Fort Lauderdale, Florida, will return to Northwestern University as a sophomore in the fall to continue studying engineering. He was captain of his football team in high school, and vice president of his class. This will be his first year at Camp Horseshoe, but he was a camper for 7 years in Maine.

Blake Willerman - Is returning for his 6th year at Camp Horseshoe, which totals 8 years in his camping career. He decides to attend camp every year to laugh with his friends, play sports, and eat homemade food (especially the wings at lunch and French toast sticks in the morning). Blake plays soccer for New Trier High School and will be a senior in August. At camp, he specializes in land sport activities and periodically dabbles in the tripping shed. On a side note, Mr. Willerman enjoys Sylvester Stallone movies and wants to become fluent in Spanish. This is his first year as a counselor and he is always ready for camp.

Adam Williams - From Bedford, England. He is an Economics graduate from the University of Exeter. He loves tennis and soccer and plays a mean game of table tennis. He is a certified lifeguard and after camp is going on an adventure across America. This will be his first Horseshoe summer.

Alec Wise - From Highland Park, IL, will be attending the University of Illinois in the fall of 2010. He is in his second year on staff specializing in basketball and his 6th year at Horseshoe overall. Brave Dancer loves all land sports and will gladly cross lacrosse sticks with you.

Erica Wood - From Sydney, Australia, has finished her studies in Management in Sport and Exercise and Certificate III in Fitness at the University of Technology Sydney. She has been a volunteer surf lifesaver for 5 seasons and has competed in surfboat racing. She has certifications such as Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue), First Aid and CPR and has worked in Surf Education with school children. Excited to be joining Horseshoe for her first year.

 

Important Dates

Michelle Reavis - Head Nurse, from Rhinelander, WI is a Registered Nurse with a background in Pediatrics, Pediatric Critical Care, Emergency Medical Services, Disaster and Emergency Preparedness/management, and Education. She is a certified life support instructor for the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (CPR) and Pediatric Life Support classes, as well as an instructor for Wilderness First Aid, CPR, and AED training through the Emergency Care and Safety Institute. She is an active member of the Association of Camp Nurses and certified as an instructor for their Basics of Camp Nursing course. She is also an active member of the Emergency Nurses Association and has certifications in the Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course and Trauma Nursing Core Course. This is her fourth year at Horseshoe.

Susan Day - RN, MSN (Registered Nurse) is an Assistant Professor at Olivet Nazarene University. Currently she teaches community health nursing, transcultural nursing, and global health. She received her BSN from Aurora University and MSN from Walden University. She is an active member of the Kappa Sigma chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society. Her background includes a Hospital Corpsman in the United States Navy, Medical Oncology, Wellness Programs, camp nurse, and CPR. She also has experience as a day camp counselor and has been trained in CPR and first aid since she was 14 years old. In addition to her roles as a teacher and camp nurse, she volunteers two weeks of her time in Argentina with college students at a health clinic for Toba Indian families. This is her fourth year at Horseshoe.

Jason Day - BS (Bachelor of Science with a major in Athletic Training and minor in Exercise Science). He recently graduated from Olivet Nazarene University and is currently testing for licensure in the state of Illinois. His background includes wrestling, football, and martial arts. He is a member of Pro Championship Wrestling (PCW), the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He holds certifications/licenses in CPR, NESTA Pilates and stress management specialist, and CDL class C. He will test for strength and conditioning coach at the end of summer. This is his fourth year at Horseshoe.

Linda Markotic - RN, BSN is a nurse from Chula Vista, California. Linda is a nurse of 24 years with a background in critical care (ICU) nursing, adult and pediatrics. For the last 2 1/2 years Linda has been a school nurse at an elementary school in Chula Vista. She loves it! She received her BSN from Rush University in Chicago and is enrolled in California State University, Fullerton's Master's program which includes the school nurse credential. Linda has CPR, ACLS and PALS certifications. This will be Linda's first year at Camp Horseshoe. She is very excited and happy to be here.

 

Kitchen

Patricia Karaba - Head Chef: Pat has been living in the Rhinelander area for 12 years. Previous to moving to Rhinelander, Pat owned and operated her own dairy farm. She currently works as the Assistant Food Service Director for the Rhinelander school district where they prepare an approximated 1800 meals a day. She spent 3 summers as the head cook at an all girl’s overnight camp in the Northwoods. She has 4 children and 3 grandchildren. This his her first year at The Shoe and will hopefully be here for many years to come.

Ricky Jimenez - Assistant Cook: Ricky is in his 2nd year at The Shoe nad has been working in kitchen for the last 14 years. He has worked at various restaurants in Chicago such as Café Bon Appetit and Byron’s Hot Dogs and for the last year has been one of the main preparers at the famous BBQ Smoque in Chicago.

Kay Theis - Kay has lived in the Rhinelander area for the last six years and in her first year at Camp Horseshoe. Kay is a nother as well as grandmother. In the offseason Kay works in the food service for the Rhinelander public school system.

 

Office

Mary Jane MacCready (Janie) - From Jackson, Michigan just finished her freshman year at Michigan State University and is going into business. She was the captain of her high school varsity volleyball team 2 years in a row, loves meeting new people and getting caught in the rain. She will be in the office for her first year at The Shoe.

Jennifer "Jen" Urbaniak - Camp Videographer/Photographer (B.A. Columbia College, Chicago, in Studies in Film and Video) from Oswego, Il. She uploads daily pictures, as well as making our yearbook DVD in which everyone receives at the reunion in the Fall. She also has certifications in CPR, AED, first aid, Lifeguarding, and Water Safety Instructor. This is her second year at Horseshoe.
